Appearance

The Lord of the Declension is adequately small in size compared to other Body of water Kings.[5] However, he is withal large plenty to consume a grown human being whole.

His advent is similar to a large oversized brownish eel with red eyes and blueish fins. These eyes become bloodshot and the pupils plow catlike when it goes into a berserk frenzy.

Personality

The Lord of the Coast is very aggressive and fierce in nature. In the beast classification, he's considered even more than savage than a typical Sea King.[four] Yet, he still possesses enough survival instinct to fear displays of power such as Shanks' angry glare.

Abilities and Powers

Being a Bounding main Male monarch, the Lord of the Coast is naturally a very roughshod and dangerous predator, likewise every bit a powerful swimmer. His will is weak plenty to be affected by Shanks' Haoshoku Haki, having been intimidated by him.

History

East Blue Saga

Romance Dawn Arc

Higuma meets his demise.

He was first seen when he ate Higuma, who was in a small-scale rowboat, soon afterwards Higuma threw Luffy into the water. He then tried to eat Luffy but scrap off Shanks' left arm instead. He was then scared away by Shanks, who stared him downwards using his Haoshoku Haki.

Ten years after, when Luffy left Foosha Village to start his journeying as a pirate, the Lord of the Coast tried to eat him again, and was promptly knocked out with a Gomu Gomu no Pistol.[6]

Major Battles

  • Lord of the Declension vs. Shanks
  • Lord of the Declension vs. Monkey D. Luffy

Anime and Manga Differences

Luffy vs. the Lord of the Coast, equally depicted in "We Are!"

Initially, the anime skipped Luffy'south "rematch" with the Lord of the Coast, every bit Luffy's past was consigned to a flashback that was somewhat shorter than the respective manga chapter.[7] Nevertheless, the scene was adapted into both the anime's first opening and Grand Battle! Rush!'s opening cinematic.

The scene was finally adjusted into the anime proper in Episode 504, and most subsequent adaptations of Luffy's backstory (such as Episode 878). These usually choreograph the scene to be closer to the manga, with Luffy raising one foot in the air and property his right arm with his left.

Translation and Dub Problems

The Viz manga does not treat 近海の主 ( Kinkai no nushi , 近海の主 ? ) as a name or epithet, instead translating it every bit "our local sea monster"; the Funimation simulcast of the anime (as well every bit Shueisha'south English language edition of the seventh popularity poll) follows this convention.[8] The fauna's 'official' English proper noun, Main of the Near Ocean, has been established only by video games - first past the American-only Ane Slice (Game Boy Advance), and subsequently by the localization of Ane Piece: Treasure Cruise.

Merchandise

He was issued aslope Shanks and Luffy in a I Piece Block Figures fix featuring the Straw Hats and their by mentors/loved ones.

Trivia

  • The Lord of the Coast was the get-go Sea King to be featured in the serial. Information technology is also the showtime Bounding main King to appear exterior of the M Line.
  • In some older fan translations, he is identified as a "shark" rather than a Ocean King (maybe in conflation with the original Romance Dawn, where his role was served by an ordinary shark). It should be noted that the term "Ocean King" was not introduced until Chapter 92.[9]
  • In Fix Canvass Pirate Crew!, Lord of the Coast is revealed to be a female Ocean King and has four pink offspring. However, this is conflicts with catechism sources.
